History of the Farm
The history of Haruchas dates back to 1902. In that year the businessman, Herrmann Sauber, who landed in Lüderitzbucht in 1898, bought the 20000ha farm, Haruchas. The name“Haruchas” means “Rush Plant” in the Nama language, the local African language spoken in this area. The farm has many rush plants found inside its dried up river beds.Herrmann Sauber erected the first farm house on the former road to the Naukluft Mountains in 1902 at Aub, the lowest lying area within the farm boundary. He bred horses for the German Colonial Army(“Schutztruppe”). During the Nama Rebellion in 1904 the farm house at Aub was destroyed, and Herrmann Sauber rebuilt his farm house at its current position on the road to Maltahoehe. This second farm house was completed in 1907, and is now used as the Sauber Family Guesthouse. The construction of the main building of today's Guesthouse began with erecting the larder in 1907. Through continuous extensions around the larder, the house was finished in 1948, and continuos to be extended today. From 1945 Herrmann's son,Jochen, extended the scope of the farming to cattle, sheep and goats. A few years later he added 3500 karakul sheep which were more profitable. In 1979 Jochen's son, Wolfgang, took over the farm. In 1988 Wolfgang and his wife, Milena, began offering trophy hunting; and this Guestfarm was opened in April 1995.
